Internationally mobile students are generally at heightened risk of experiencing mental health problems due to multiple coinciding risk factors such as undiagnosed mental disorders, crisis originating at home, high family expectations, exposure to an unfamiliar classroom culture and, perceived discrimination. As academics and administrators, we often struggle to find satisfying answers to important questions when attempting to support these students. How can we identify and respond to affected students in a culturally sensitive and institutionally appropriate way? When should we involve others and where can we turn to if a crisis escalates? When and how should we confront a distressed student to prevent self and/or other harm?
Led by experienced trainers Stephanie Griffiths and Frank Haber, the EAIE Academy course “Building a toolkit for addressing international student mental health” will enhance your professional skill set for tackling students' mental health issues and developing a robust, adaptable support network within your educational organisation. This two-day course, taking place on 24–25 April at The Social Hub Amsterdam City, comprises eight modules with social breaks for networking, including a networking drink.
This course will enable you, as an academic or administrator, to identify and safely respond to mental health concerns and crisis situations that may emerge during advising and teaching situations in person as well as remotely. You’ll learn to tackle the challenge of being a first responder; the policies, practices and ethics of working with vulnerable students across cultures; and how to collaborate with healthcare providers and other stakeholders on and beyond campus. By the end, you’ll have more clarity about your role and its boundaries and your professional toolkit for addressing students’ mental health concerns and building a strong and flexible support system at your institution.
This course provides excellent training for academic staff as well as staff and heads of department who have regular contact with international students or work within student service departments such as student housing, academic advising, international offices, student affairs, career counselling, etc.

Intercultural Consultant/Trainer, Stephanie Griffiths Intercultural Consultancy
A specialist in student mental health, with a focus on outreach and training within higher education
Stephanie is an intercultural consultant/trainer at her own intercultural consultancy for higher education institutions, which focuses on the internationalisation of students. She recently retired from the position of Associate Director for Counselling and Mental health Support at King’s College London, after having worked in the field of psychological counselling for over 30 years. Stephanie has developed a programme of outreach and training, with the aim of enabling home and international students, academics and frontline administrative staff to be trained in the psychological pressures that they may encounter. She embarked on a study trip to Fudan and Shanghai Jaio Tong Universities in 2015, with the objective of understanding the presentation and treatment of mental health issues amongst students in China and has since been invited to speak at several conferences in China, organised through Oxford Prospects and Global Development Institute. Stephanie studied English and Education at Goldsmiths University; Psychology at Birkbeck College, University of London; Guidance and Counselling at Reading University and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. She was the recipient of the King’s College Principal’s Award in 2018, which recognises an individual who has ‘gone above and beyond to champion the goals of the university and has delivered outstanding service as a King’s Ambassador’.
She has been a trainer at the EAIE Academy for the past five years and was one of the keynote speakers at the AACSB and EAIE Expert Community Business Education in 2020, on the topic of ‘avoiding virtual burnout: maintaining engagement, motivation and mental health in students, staff and faculty’. She is currently Chair of the Guidance and Counselling Expert Community.
Psychological Counsellor and Intercultural Education Officer, Constructor University, Germany
Frank is an independent psychologist, trainer and consultant specialised in enhancing mental wellbeing and intercultural competence promotion within and beyond higher education. Inspired by 20+ years of hands-on counselling work with international students, staff and faculty at various higher education institutions, Frank has become passionate about sharing his professional experiences through talks, blog posts and workshops. Frank’s past responsibilities include establishing and running a counselling and intercultural services department at Constructor University, setting up and providing counselling services for staff and faculty at Oldenburg University and serving as head of psychological and social counselling at University Bremen. After graduating from the University of Bremen with an MSc in Psychology, Frank received postgraduate training in cognitive-behavioural therapy, ACT and schema therapy.
As past Chair of the EAIE Expert Community Guidance and Counselling, speaker at many EAIE Annual Conferences and long-standing trainer for student mental health at the EAIE Academy, Frank has gained vast experience in the field that he is happy to share.
