2023 Winter Forum: Across disciplines, across boundaries
Interdisciplinarity goes hand-in-hand with internationalisation. The work of international higher education is trending in a myriad of ways towards crossing boundaries, and not just in the familiar sense of traversing national borders. Indeed, there is a repeated call for the sector to facilitate innovative, boundary-spanning approaches to education and research to address the most urgent and complex challenges of our time. While this breaking down of the traditional boundaries and silos in higher education serves to unleash new creative and intellectual impulses, it also introduces a whole host of questions about how we manage such complex boundary-crossing initiatives and how we evaluate the quality and impact of this type of work.
With this edition of Forum – the exclusive EAIE member magazine – 15 authors representing perspectives from seven different countries around the world address these questions and others related to the many intersections of interdisciplinarity and internationalisation. From Alícia Orta-Ramirez and Lluís Costa Tutusaus’ article on interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare education, to Georgina Born’s assertion that "internationalisation and interdisciplinarity are intrinsically good bedfellows", to Piet Van Hove and Simone Hackett’s insights on the different ‘cultures’ of the academic disciplines, the Winter 2023 edition of Forum offers a broad variety of perspectives on interdisciplinary research and study and their relationships to international education.
