Marking 35 years of impact: A look back and a look ahead

EAIE 35 year anniversary.jpg

As the EAIE reaches its 35th anniversary, it’s the perfect moment to pause and appreciate just how far we’ve come. From our early days to the dynamic force we are today, the EAIE has adapted, grown and evolved right alongside our incredible community. This milestone isn’t just about us–it’s a reflection of the collective insights, dedication and passion that each of you brings to the field of international higher education. With the big celebration in Toulouse just around the corner, it’s time to gear up for an event that promises to be nothing short of transformative. Curious to know what has made this journey so remarkable? Let’s dive in.

Empowering international education, one step at a time

Since day one, the EAIE has been all about empowering professionals in international education. Over the past 35 years, we’ve not only faced challenges head-on but also seized every opportunity to innovate and build a network that is as supportive as it is diverse. We're proud that the EAIE is considered a go-to hub; a place where European and global practitioners come together to share, learn and grow. Whether it’s through our conferences, publications or training sessions, we’ve strived to meet our community’s needs to create spaces where peers in the field can thrive and tackle the ever-changing landscape of international education.

When the world threw us curveballs, like global uncertainties and a pandemic that shook the foundations of education, the EAIE didn’t just stand by. We listened to you, our community, and took action. From expanding our digital resources to fostering discussions on critical issues like student mental health and global conflicts, we’ve been there every step of the way. Our new suite of digital offerings, including webinars, podcasts and online courses, has not only strengthened our community but also brought us closer together, proving that even in tough times, we come out stronger on the other side.

Amplifying our influence and engagement

At the core of the EAIE’s mission is the belief that international experiences enrich lives and contribute to a better society. Over the years, and with your support and key insights, we’ve become a vital voice in the sector, earning recognition for our role in shaping key discussions in international education. Our research publications, like the EAIE Barometer, have become trusted sources for policymakers and government agencies looking for data-driven insights.

Our partnerships with organisations like the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and initiatives like SUCTI and SUCTIA underscore our commitment to fostering internationalisation in higher education. These collaborations benefit everyone, from students and practitioners to leaders and has created a ripple effect that strengthens the entire sector.

Shout-out to our community’s contributions

Let’s be honest, none of this would have been possible without the incredible contributions of countless professionals who’ve volunteered their time and expertise over the years. From serving on the Board and General Council to leading training sessions, our volunteers are the backbone of the EAIE’s success. We’re beyond grateful for the dedication of everyone who’s helped shape the EAIE into what it is today.

A new era of leadership

As we celebrate this milestone, we’re also stepping into an exciting new chapter. After years of transformative leadership under Leonard Engel, we’re thrilled to welcome Mervin Bakker as our new Executive Director. Leonard’s work has turned the EAIE into a beacon of excellence, and under Mervin’s guidance, we’re eager to build on our strengths and explore new opportunities for growth.

Join us in Toulouse!

From our humble beginnings with just 600 participants to this year’s conference, which will welcome over 6000 professionals, our journey is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision.
