Living our EAIE values in times of conflict

A message from EAIE President Sara López Selga on the importance of having difficult conversations and staying true to our values.
One of the things that I have always found so great about the EAIE is that many people in our community are driven by a shared belief that international education fosters deeper understanding, connects diverse perspectives and nurtures them to flourish. But what does this mean for our actions in times of conflict, uncertainty, and polarisation? We see that our community’s resilience is tested, and that for us at the EAIE it seems even more essential, as part of our mission, to provide a safe space to come together, share experiences and look ahead.
With thousands of participants attending yearly, the EAIE Conference and Exhibition fulfils its role as a global platform enabling meaningful interactions and human connection, where we see our vision and values come to life. To contribute to this inclusive and collaborative community, the EAIE welcomes all perspectives, contributions and backgrounds, and encourages everyone to arrive with an open mind.
In recent months, the EAIE Board has engaged in intense discussions, asking ourselves: How can we continue providing a space where diverging perspectives meet—whether to find common ground or to agree to disagree? Can we remain as inclusive as we have always been, or must we find new approaches?
On the one hand, the answer to these questions is rather straightforward, because the strength of our community lies in the diversity of its voices. We are convinced that we must have constructive conversations, also in difficult times or on sensitive subjects. We are committed to providing an inclusive platform for our community where dialogue can take place with mutual respect. On the other hand, we cannot and will not turn a blind eye to situations where colleagues are affected by conflicts and higher education is jeopardised. With this in mind, and in line with our social responsibility, we will take proactive steps ahead of the EAIE Conference and Exhibition in Gothenburg to support those in need and to make sure their voices are heard too.
Hence, we look forward to welcoming a broad and diverse representation of the global community in September in Gothenburg and at our other activities. In times of conflict, our values-based commitment to inclusivity, collaboration and open dialogue ensures that all who attend the EAIE Conference and Exhibition have a space to engage, exchange knowledge, meet partners and shape the future of international education together with respect for each others’ context and perspectives.
We will follow-up in the coming months with further communication on what this means concretely and look forward to seeing you in Gothenburg in September, or at another occasion, to continue this important conversation!
On behalf of the EAIE Board,
Sara López Selga
