Global perspectives at students’ fingertips
Located at the heart of Germany and Europe, AUAS recognises that a substantial number of students do not have the opportunity to study abroad or, even if they do, only experience a single foreign culture during their studies. To address this, the higher education institution (HEI) launched a virtual lecture series featuring expert speakers from AUAS’ partner institutions across Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa.
Each week, students engage in a 1.5-hour live lecture by an expert from a different partner institution, including a dynamic Q&A session. Topics align with the UN’s definition of global citizenship and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), covering historical, societal, political and economic issues.
Student testimonial: "The elective ‘Perspectives of Global Citizenship’ is a great opportunity for students to gain insight into the concept of global citizenship which is embedded into the fourth of the 17 SDGs by the United Nations Ensuring Inclusive and Quality Education for All and thus relevant to us as both students and citizens of a globalised world. (…) It is an opportunity to study and learn about matters of global importance in an international context from the comfort of your home."
These lectures often explore underrepresented, neglected and taboo topics, such as the challenges faced by indigenous populations and divided nations. A notable highlight in 2024 was a guest lecture by the president of the Global Citizenship Alliance.
An inclusive, flexible and holistic learning approach based on global partnerships
Time zone differences across continents can be a barrier to live participation. To ensure inclusivity, AUAS records sessions if needed and provides materials on accessible online platforms. This approach allows students to engage asynchronously and guarantees that no one is left behind.
Simultaneously, ties with partner HEIs are strengthened by inviting speakers from these partners to bring along their own students to the virtual classroom, creating a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) experience.
Furthermore, the series goes beyond pure lectures by incorporating pre- and post-session assignments that promote critical thinking and reflection. These tasks encourage students to analyse global issues from multiple perspectives and foster meaningful learning outcomes.
Key learning outcomes
Through this innovative initiative, students develop:
- Awareness of global interconnectedness: Insights into global social, political, and economic dynamics.
- Cultural sensitivity and appreciation: Understanding and respect for diverse perspectives.
- Critical thinking skills: The ability to form well-rounded viewpoints on complex issues.
- Digital communication competence: Skills for engaging in thoughtful online discussions.
- Global citizenship mindset: A readiness to act responsibly on the global stage.
Guest lecturer testimonial: "A key takeaway for students was the recognition that global citizenship goes beyond language proficiency. Through our discussions, they explored the importance of adaptability, critical thinking, and cross-cultural communication skills in navigating international careers. They also had the opportunity to reflect on the role of hierarchy, tradition, and social expectations in shaping professional interactions across different cultural contexts."
By leveraging virtual connections, AUAS equips students with the knowledge, empathy and critical thinking skills necessary to thrive in a globalised world. This forward-thinking approach underscores its role as a leader in fostering cosmopolitan responsibility and global engagement.
