Internationalization of Higher Education: Current Trends and Future Scenarios

Published date: 02 April 2024

In its Strategy 2030, the International Association of Universities (IAU) emphasises the inclusive nature of internationalisation, focusing on both people and ideas, with the ultimate goal of societal benefit. To achieve this, the IAU has set strategic objectives, starting with ensuring that higher education institutions (HEIs) and stakeholders worldwide clearly understand internationalisation and are aware of the latest trends and developments. Conducting research and global surveys on internationalisation are key tools for the IAU in achieving this objective. This research benefits researchers, practitioners, policymakers and anyone interested in internationalisation at both institutional and broader levels.

The IAU Global Surveys are the only global surveys on internationalisation that exist in the world.

 Key findings from the research:

  • Internationalisation is of high importance for HEIs around the world and its importance has increased over time.
  • Internationalisation plays a fundamental role in society, is important for sustainable development, helps to promote intercultural understanding and to combat racism and xenophobia.
  • There is no common pressing future priority for internationalisation at global level, showing a very diverse landscape, but in some regions there are clear priorities.
