Mapping English-Taught Programmes Worldwide

Published date: 30 May 2024

The changes in English Medium Education were considered in a 2021 report from the British Council and Studyportals. This latest study identifies key trends in on-campus English-taught programmes from 2019–2024. British Council IELTS commissioned the report to understand these changes within the international education landscape and the implications for the use of IELTS to support these changes.

To date, this is the most thorough research report globally that considers the international education landscape and use of English proficiency testing.

 Key findings from the research:

  • Out of 183,000 on-campus Bachelor's and Master's English-taught programmes worldwide, 78% continue to be offered by the "big four" study destinations - the UK, US, Australia, and Canada.
  • Compared to 2019, the number of on-campus English-taught programmes offered outside the big four has grown by 48%.
  • Outside the big four, the European Higher Education Area offers the largest supply of English programmes, followed by East Asia, the Chinese Region and Sub-Saharan Africa.
