What's new session

Discover the latest developments for UK’s Higher Education partnerships in Europe. What are the institutional drivers? How do UK universities reshape their internationalisation efforts?

The session will provide a comprehensive picture of the current partnership landscape for UK Higher Education sector in Europe with an outlook for the sector’s transnational education (TNE) activities in particular. Panelists will share trends of student numbers, the motivations of the sector as well as barriers. The audience will be the first to receive key takeaways from two recent studies that zoom into France, Greece and Spain, where UK has longer, historical ties, and seven non-EU countries under spotlight including Turkey and emerging markets Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

Maria Tsakali

British Council, Greece

Maria Tsakali is the British Council’s interim lead for Higher Education and Science in the EU region.  In this role, she leads the British Council education network in the EU in facilitating and advancing the UK connections and collaboration with EU member states on international student mobility, institutional partnerships, innovation, academic collaboration, and research excellence.  Maria has a strong background in education policy, research management, and international cooperation.  Her expertise also includes fostering partnerships between universities and research institutions across EU countries with the UK.  Previously, she led the British Council education programme in Greece and initiated the development of important bilateral programmes such as the UK-Greece Strategic Partnership in Education.

Nilgün Yalcin Felchner

British Council, Türkiye

Nilgün Yalçin Felchner is currently directing the Higher Education Insights and Engagement Hub for Europe region which consists of 44 countries. Her work focuses on research in support of developing and strengthening higher education partnerships with the UK. 
She studied Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at Istanbul Technical University and received her master’s degree in business administration from Galatasaray University in Istanbul. Following her career in private sector, she joined the British Council 17 years ago. She held various senior management roles within Türkiye before taking up her current regional role.

Maddalaine Ansell

Maddalaine Ansell joined the British Council as Director Education in November 2018.  Prior to this she was Chief Executive of University Alliance, a mission group representing professional and technical universities.  Maddalaine previously worked for 15 years as a Civil Servant with stints in the Treasury, Number 10, the Home Office and then the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.  She began her career as a corporate lawyer, working for both Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Sullivan & Cromwell. Maddalaine leads the Global Education Strategy and Portfolio working collaboratively with HMG, the Devolved Administrations and the UK education sectors.
